1. Can non-swimmers join this boat ride and snorkeling adventure?
Yes. It’s an exciting and scenic boat ride to beautiful and historic Kealakekua Bay and Capt Cook Monument. Many guests enjoy the boat ride and visiting Kealakekua Bay scenery for the hour and half we are in the bay without snorkeling or entering the water
However, those who wish to snorkel or enter the water must have good swimming skills and be fit enough to tread water for up to 20 minutes and climb a short ladder to reenter the boat.
2. I’m 4+ months pregnant – can I join the boat ride and snorkeling adventure?
No, we don’t recommend it due to the adventurous nature of the boat ride.
3. I weigh 275+ pounds – can I join the boat ride and snorkeling adventure?
No, we don’t allow guests over 250 pounds due to the limitations of the ladder and difficulty of rescuing anyone over this weight from the water.
4. Can those over the age limit (Age 70) or under the age limit (Age 5) attend the boat ride and snorkel adventures?
No. Due to the adventurous nature of the fast boat ride and ocean swells, we do not recommend guests over the age of 70 or under the age of 5.
5. Will I get seasick?
No. The boat ride is short enough (20-30 minutes) that even in rougher ocean conditions it’s very unlikely you would have enough time to get seasick. Also, our snorkeling destination is in the protected waters of Kealakekua Bay so even if you do feel queasy underway – you will be in calm water while snorkeling and can recover. (protected from the boat rocking). If in doubt take 1 tablet of bonine the night before your trip and one more a couple of hours before you depart.
6. Is the 830am or 12pm trip better?
Both trips are good and the coral, fish population the same on both trips. Water temperature and wind also very similar at 8:30am and 12pm. It’s really a matter of what works better with your schedule and what we have available on the week you are hoping to attend.
7. Will I see dolphins or whales?
Whales are seasonal between November and March. Dolphins are here year round and the odds of seeing them are about 50/50. The dolphins are nocturnal and come into coastal areas during the day to rest. We see them from a distance of 50+ yards – the distance permitted by the federal Marine Mammals protection act.
