Kealakekua Bay Reopens!

Kealakekua Bay is now open for guided kayak & snorkel trips, as authorized by the State of Hawaii, division of State Parks. State Parks has issued 3 permits to kayak companies now authorized to launch from the Napoopoo Pier and land at Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park for snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument.  The first and longest State Park's permitted operator at Kealakekua Bay is Adventures in Paradise Kayaks, which provides daily kayak and snorkel excursions to Kealakekua Bay.

These 3 permitted kayak companies follow strict protocols and requirements for their operations at the bay, including limits on the number of patrons, landing, marine mammal interactions, and many other rules designed to protect the environment and protect this cultural heritage site.  The companies also contribute to State Parks efforts by paying fees for each guest as well as contribute in regular cleanups under the supervision of a State archeologist.  These 3 State permitted companies are the most professional and established kayak companies in Kona and in the past primarily rented kayaks to visitors for Kealakekua Bay, now primarily provide the State Permitted Guided Tours to visitors.

By switching from providing kayak rentals to guided kayak tours, these eco-minded and State Permitted companies have helped to preserve Kealakekua Bay & Captain Cook Monument from degradation by too many unsupervised kayak visitors.  Today, the vast majority of visitors participate in the recommended eco-friendly guided kayak tours - and is so doing help protect Kealakekua Bay for future generations.  Experienced residents may still obtain individual kayak permits for kayaking on the bay but are not permitted to land their kayaks at Captain Cook Monument for snorkeling or at Napoopoo Pier.  Those wishing to rent a kayak and explore on their own, may still kayak along hundreds of miles of the beautiful Kona coast.  But for now, for the protection of the natural and cultural resources of Kealakekua Bay, it's guided tours if you want to land a kayak at Kealakekua Bay and snorkel Captain Cook Monument.

Before booking a guided kayak or motorboat tour...
Our destination,  Kealakekua Bay & the Captain Cook Monument, is well known for calm winds & wave conditions & we land the kayaks on shore for easier snorkeling.  Calm sea conditions makes our trip one of the safest, easiest & most enjoyable kayak & snorkel adventures.

Unfortunately, not all  destinations are as safe and interesting as Kealakekua Bay.  Be sure you reserve the Kona coast's best snorkeling at Capt Cook Monument & kayaking across Kealakekua Bay.

Beware of kayak tours that paddle along exposed coastlines near Keauhou or Kailua Bay ("sea caves"), Puako and Kohala (Waikoloa resorts area)  have rougher sea conditions and seasickness for many guests.

Also, before booking a kayak tour be sure the kayak company lands the kayaks to snorkel.  Jumping off and climbing back onto a kayak for snorkeling from the water is difficult for most visitors...  nearly impossible for those who are not athletic.
If you are traveling with children, novices or anyone prone to seasickness - join us at our protected locations. Schedule your tour for the island's safe and easy kayaking and snorkeling location - Kealakekua Bay and Capt. Cook Monument.
